Faced with the questions that parents are asking in relation to the vaccination against Covid-19 of children, the president of the French Society of Pediatrics, Christèle Gras-Le Guen, provides details.
Many questions arise about the vaccination of children against Covid-19. For example, do we have enough perspective on the vaccine against Covid-19? Yes, according to a professor of pediatrics at the Nantes University Hospital (Loire-Atlantique), thanks to studies carried out by the United States and Israel, which have vaccinated en masse. “We have the hindsight of not far from 10 million doses to say what the side effects of this vaccine are“, explains the expert.
Some parents worry about serious side effects. There are indeed in some very rare cases myocarditis, inflammation of the heart muscle. But “Hospitalizations after vaccination are rare, this concerns one case per 100,000 in girls, and one case in 15,000 in boys”, says the pediatrician. These side effects require hospitalization for a few days, and can be treated well. As for the long-term risks, especially in rapidly growing children, “vaccination, growth, and the immune system are completely independent things“, according to this professor of medicine.
