Health crisis in Algeria: an association calls for donations by “based on the notoriety” of footballers Paul Pogba, Franck Ribéry or Nabil Fékir

“The Delta variant of the Covid has struck down Algeria”estimated Friday August 13 on franceinfo the president of the association Seed Charity Nadia Fekir who “hopes to raise 975,000 euros to finance 1,500 oxygen concentrators”. “It’s a medical device that you plug into an electrical outlet. That is to say that even in remote corners, villages, it is a device that can really save as many lives as possible.” In a video shared on social networks, the call for donations is relayed by footballers Paul Pogba, Franck Ribéry, Riyad Mahrez, or even Nabil Fekir, who is none other than the husband of Nadia Fekir.

franceinfo: What is the objective of this donation campaign?

Nadia Fekir: We hope to raise 975,000 euros to fund 1,500 oxygen concentrators. It is a medical device that is plugged into an electrical outlet, so it can be useful, even outside hospitals. That is to say that even in remote corners, villages, it is a device that can really save as many lives as possible. In three days, we have already collected 237,000 euros from more than 2,000 donors. I take this opportunity to really thank them all. We had a lot of video sharing.

Was it the new wave of contamination this summer in Algeria that pushed you to this mobilization?

Yes, it is really disastrous what is happening. The Delta variant of the Covid has struck down Algeria. There are a lot of cases of contamination and hospitals can no longer accommodate the sick. So we received a lot of calls for donations via our endowment fund. There is a whole process that allows us to verify the reliability of calls. There, it is a partner in France who deals directly with doctors in Algeria and the local population. He informed us of the need and therefore of everything needed to save as many lives as possible.

Is it an obvious step for you, this way of helping the Algerian population for the diaspora in France?

Obviously, we have a lot of Franco-Algerian ambassadors who play in Europe. Some play for the Algerian national team, others for the France team.

Do you also think you have a role to play in education around vaccination against Covid-19?

I do not know. All that is vaccination is not too much of our responsibility. We are more there to raise funds and help emergency campaigns. We stay within our objective, we collect and redistribute to the poorest and most disadvantaged people.
